History

The Council commenced in 1991 under contract to the NSW Government to design, administer and deliver a pre-licence safety awareness program for firearm licence applicants.

This was a brave new step for public policy and served to elevate a sense of firearm safety in the community.

In 2006, the Council recognised the need to accelerate and broaden the acceptance of safety training and undertook the arduous pathway to RTO status. This serves to:

  • Validate the skill level of successful trainees to a national accreditation.
  • Further improve the understanding of firearm safety and the skill level of firearm users.
  • Provide a bench-marking process for employees with firearms under a duty of care philosophy.
  • Provide an evidence-based system for standards of achievement in the firearms industry.
